While robot vacuums are great in keeping your floors clean, they can't substitute for a larger vacuum. Even the best vacuums struggle to get into carpets or rugs, and can often get caught in socks and cords.
Maintaining a regular schedule of maintenance (replacing filters, cutting tangled hair from brushes, and emptying the dust bin) can help your robot last longer.
Battery Life
Most robot vacuums can handle one or two cleaning sessions before needing a charge. The Ecovacs Q30S Combo is the runner-up of our top selections. It comes with batteries that last for up to 180 minutes (3,230 square foot) on one charge. That amount of runtime is more than enough time to clean smaller homes with a mix of hard floors and low-pile carpets, or a larger home in which the rooms are about the same size.
A longer battery life means that the robot is able to spend more time cleaning and less time charging on its dock. It is recommended to choose one with an auto-emptying bin. These models are more efficient in picking up debris and returning to docks to recharge. It's also important to empty or change the filter and wipe down sensors and cameras on a regular basis to ensure they are able to see your home clearly.
Smart mapping technology is an important feature to look out for since it permits you to program your robot to only clean certain rooms or avoid areas where it's likely to bump into furniture or other obstacles. It's also beneficial for ensuring your robot is able to go under and around sofas, beds and other furniture with a high height. A few robovacs that are cheap come with boundary strips that you can use to block off certain areas. Other models of higher quality depend on sensors and cameras.
Even the most powerful robot vacuums cannot substitute a traditional vac for heavy-duty dirt and debris. It's recommended to have an electric vacuum in your home for these tasks and schedule robot vacs for light cleanings throughout the week.
Navigation
A robot must be able to navigate around your home without getting stuck or crashing into objects such as metal screws or loose pet hair or sand. In our tests, we use a tracking device to follow the robot as it moves through a multiroom lab and maps out its surroundings. robot floor cleaner check how well the robot can avoid obstacles such as power cords, furniture leg and pet waste.
The best robots can create different floors and recognize landmarks like windows and doors. The most advanced ones, like the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, have a dual-sensor navigation system that uses a LIDAR sensor to map the room, and a light camera at the front of the robot to identify objects in real time. This allows the S8 to stay clear of common obstacles such as power cords and furniture legs and can also store up to four different floor maps within its internal memory.
More affordable models don't have this kind of object detection and rely on bump sensors which aren't as accurate. In my tests they were able to see through dog poop and cords, as well as a pair shoes placed in the middle. The Dreametech D10+ is the best value choice. It has excellent carpet and hard floor, tangle, and hair pickup. It also has an auto empty score that is close to perfect.
A large onboard dustbin that doesn't need to be emptying manually, is also a feature that's important. For models that mop the floor, this tank is able to provide enough water for several weeks of cleaning sessions. Karcher's RCV 5 is an excellent illustration of this. It has a large enough footprint to fit under furniture, but not so large that it can't fit into the space between your bathtub and toilet.
Apps
Robot vacuums are a lot like their upright counterparts and require an enormous amount of technology to bring them up to speed. There are plenty of alternatives available in a marketplace that is mature. However, even the most advanced models still require some interaction with their users - especially when cleaning schedules are being planned and establishing a floor plan and establishing virtual barriers.

Think about a model that has its own app that can determine the layout of your home and save these settings for later use. This will let the vacuum begin where it left off in subsequent runs, rather than having to start the mapping process each time.
It's important to look out for a model that has spot or zone cleaning modes. You can instruct the robot vacuum cleaner to focus on a specific area, such as under the table after a large family meal. It is possible to do this using the app or by voice commands.
The ability to avoid objects is another option that is available on several models. It allows the robot to see something in its path, such as shoes, a crate of dog toys or a crate filled with dog toys, and then guide itself around it. This prevents it from running into things that could damage its sensors or cause a jam.
This feature is offered on some of the more expensive models we test. However, they tend to rely on bump sensors for this and didn't always manage to avoid obstacles in my test homes.
Pet Hair
Find an upright vacuum cleaner specifically designed to remove pet hair. The most effective models will have a high suction, a brush that stops tangling, and an automatic emptying mechanism. Some models can also determine dirt levels and adjust cleaning intensity in line with the level of dirt. They can also detect objects that aren't part of your flooring in your home, such as furniture, toys and food bowls.
Some robot vacuums include pet-friendly features, such as a small water dispenser that can be used for mopping floors and a HEPA filter that can reduce allergens like pet dander. They might also have a quieter mode of operation to cut down on the amount of noise produced during cleaning sessions.
Robot vacuums with maps are an excellent option for pet owners. They're designed to evaluate your home and develop an attack plan based on the layout of each room and obstacles. Dust Bin
Unless you're looking for something small it is recommended to select one that can carry at least a full bag of garbage from a single cleaning session.
